[Francis looks a little distracted and uncertain. He lets out a sigh.]

I wonder if I might prevail on one of the ladies of the Barge for some company? [He smiles in acknowledgement of how it sounds.] Nothing, untoward, I... just was reminded of how I missed my wife in that port. She's an intelligent, witty woman and I very much relied on her to give me a grounding.

I should actually love to hear about your wife. there's a beautiful feeling to a love that works. I don't necessarily mean all the hearts and flowers bollocks. I mean the kind of person you can trust to shoot through your nonvital spots to nail the bastard with a knife at your throat.

Elizabeth doesn't make mistakes.

[He still knocks, because that's good manners, but lets himself in, greeting the dogs as he does.] The better to preserve my legacy, Iris.

[She's flat on her back in the huge bed, pink leopard-print bedspread rumpled around her; but the pink silk nightie's more or less decent and she has one of those sports-drink squirty bottles filled with gin and tonic from the bottles on the bedside.]

'Elp yourself, love. I'm not getting up even if the boat's on fire. I normally never ask 'ow people died. I reckon they'll tell me of their own accord sooner or later.

A nerve? [He quirks an eyebrow at her as he helps himself. It's more gin than tonic.] No. [He smiles.] Elizabeth simply doesn't make mistakes.

[He settles down nearby.] And she didn't this time. My only regret is that she's not here with me. But then, who knew there was actually an afterlife?

I make mistakes all the time, me. I've 'ad a lot of practise turning 'em into successes, is all.

[She smiles; the comparison comes without value judgement, as do most of Iris' observations.]

She sounds very right for you. When'd you first know you loved 'er?

Elizabeth tends toward the deliberate.

[Where Iris flukes her way, it seems like. Not a value judgement in that either. Just a different way of functioning and it seems to work for Iris.]

Oh. Hm. She'd been a force of nature from the very first moment. But love came when I came across my first set back. I got depressed. It was over minor things, nothing really you could pin down, and my work started to suffer. [He shook his head.] She brought things into focus. My work stopped suffering.

[Iris actully flukes a lot less than she lets people think. This would probably not surprise Francis too much.]

I'd like to meet 'er sometime. What d'you think drew 'er to you?

[Iris is undoubtedly cunning.]

She'd enjoy that.

Specifically? I'm not sure. Perhaps she thought I had potential.
