Video 9 ♔ Guys Are Dolls

Well, now that we've been granted permission [Could you be more of a prat, Charles? Good riddance.] to be very angry indeed, could someone take this... thing off of me. [He squeezes the doll in distaste.] It's really awful.

No offense intended, Marquis. [He sort of haphazardly tosses it to one side.] Feel free to pick it up, if you like. I certainly don't want it. [Not that he can take his eyes off it.]

[When the Marquis replies several minutes later, he looks winded and is clutching his side with an arm. His ribs felt tight for just a moment, which of course agitated an old injury. He doesn't think to connect the two.]

How quaint. I shall have to compliment the craftsmen. [He tries to smile, just winces] ...I'm sure I'll be along eventually, dearheart, but I'm feeling a little under the weather.

[The incongruity distracts him, from burying the thing in his papers.] Presumably the Admiral. Are you all right?

[Renate's making unhappy noises in the background.]

Right as rain, really.

Perhaps you should convince your pet not to contradict you the next time you tell a lie.

She wants a walk and she's going to have to wait.

As am I, evidently.

My apologies. I will speak to you soon. [He needs to go lie down.]

Of course.

[And as promised, he does appear, with Renate leashed, though it's about an hour later. He looks considerably better than he did over the network, at the very least, and he politely knocks at Francis' door.]

[He looks him over as he lets him in, though he doesn't have the doll in hand.] Do come in, Marquis.

[He delays a little, to greet the dog before he goes over to where it's been hidden, pulling it out.

It's all he can do not chuck it at him, but he bears the Marquis no ill will and he's in control of his temper, dammit.]

You're in a frightful mood, mon ami. [He reaches out to take it, because he'd certainly like a good look, see if it's like the one he's keeping in his room.]

[He sighs, though it doesn't help.] And I don't like it. Wasn't there when this flood began.

[But he hands it over and then it vanishes. He blinks, feeling better.] Oh.

Likely safe to say it's part of the flood then, oui?

[He gasps, staring at the place it used to be.]

...What do you suppose that means?

Well, either it's gone. Or it's elsewhere. Judging by the network... it may well be the latter.

A shame. I would have liked to take a better look at it. I received one very similar, you see.

I'm thinking so. Striking resemblance, I'd say. What of this one? You had a chance to look at it.

Your very visage has never struck anger and violence in my heart. [He shrugs.] I think it was more in the clothes than the face.

[He blinks at that.] Anger and violence?

It makes no sense to me, presumably something to do with the flood.

[Of course the flood but that still leaves him a little perplexed; he never thought it would be abnormal to realize people reacted the same as you.]

But over a doll, of all things?

I don't generally, Marquis! [He scoffed.] I'm relatively certain that any doll I've encountered in my years have at most provoked a vague sort of disinterest.

I must seem like I'm teasing you.

[And he does crack a little smile.]

Merely attempting to better understand. Is there anything specific about that "very visage"?

[He thinks.] Not especially. I'm afraid, asking me to help you understand is a little difficult when I don't, quite.

I still hoped you might, and I tend to assume you'll hold back to avoid sounding strange.

[...He may have lived past his death and overcome several faults but he'll never not maintain his fairly petty assumptions about the English.]

I know the only thoughts I have toward the one in my cabin are irrational ones.

[He scoffs at that too.] What do I care about sounding strange? Isn't this supposed to happen upon this ship?

Lucky you. I don't particularly enjoy being angry. How some of my colleagues seem to treasure it is beyond me.

Oh, you're being sensitive. I'm saying you're lucky, not that you enjoy anger.

[He rolls his eyes.] I know precisely what I implied. Please don't correct me.

Lie, not necessarily. Omit out of habit, perhaps very much as I have done? Perhaps.

[Side-eye to end all side-eyes.]

No, you inferred that. Now, your business as to what you infer. But really, I'm finding this something beneath my efforts to argue.

What I was saying was that being irrational was better than being angry. And reacting to your bafflement, when I felt that couldn't be more clear, but if you're intent on making up my side of the conversation, then feel free to do it in your own cabin, so I needn't pretend to care.

Then I failed to communicate my meaning. To say my feelings were irrational does not mean I did not experience anger, as "irrational" is not an emotion. I just recognized that the impressions and emotions I felt over a doll I'd never seen before could not be rational.

[He's not any less frustrated.] And yet, you spoke as if my own feelings were not yours.

[His expression drops to one a little more impassive.]

...I'm merely attempting to make sense of this flood. It will determine what I ought to do with the doll currently in my possession. I'll not trouble you further.

[He shrugged.] Put it away somewhere where it won't be a problem.

Why not simply throw it away if you don't like it?

[Shrug.] Only right I offer it to the model, if I can. If he didn't want it, I probably would have.

Always so polite.

[That would be a compliment.]

[He smiles.] I try.

I do hope your efforts are appropriately appreciated.

[Because she appreciates them.]
